Today I want to address the hot topic of psychiatric drug withdrawal.
Avoid the Extremes
While there is lots of literature on this subject, I will boil it all down for you: be careful of the two extreme positions. On the one hand, there are those health care professionals who have become too liberal in dispensing medications to treat symptoms, while not spending time to listen to their patients. On the other hand, there are those patients who view these medications as the root of all evil and to be avoided at all costs.
Value Your Uniqueness
Show me one person who has a mental illness, and I will show you one person who has a mental illness. No two people are alike and to disregard this is to disregard the very unique creativity that you were born with.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
One book that I have found helpful on this topic of drug withdrawal is Harm Reduction Guide to Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs, which is offered free of charge on the Icarus site, a place that advocates for those with mental illness, viewing that which others label as a disease, as a ‘mad’ gift that needs to be cultivated.
Gather Your Support
A second step in determining if drug withdrawal is for you is to gather around yourself a support team of individuals who want your best… regardless.
Do Your Research
During my own research, I sadly discovered that the United States government’s Food and Drug Administration has been taken to task for some questionable practices, appearing therefore as the fox left in charge of guarding the hen house.
Take Action Now
Don’t wait until you are faced with the regret of procrastination as to making your decision to begin arming yourself with the facts.
The Bigger Issue
As a Christian, I know that each one of you has been created on purpose for a purpose, and that this issue of psychiatric drug withdrawal is dwarfed by the reality that God has a plan for your life.
So, perhaps there is a more foundational question to consider: will getting off psychiatric drugs better allow you to lead the life God has purposed for you?
